Still on top: Tower of Power at Viper Alley
Tower of Power, a 10-man band, has pumped out its own unique brand of original soul music for more than 40 years. The group has toured and played with some of the most famous acts in the world, including Huey Lewis and the News, Elton John and Aretha Franklin. Widely known in the music industry as the best band to be in, Tower of Power will be out in force at Viper Alley in Lincolnshire for a show on June 26.
The Lake County Journal caught up with saxophone player Emilio Castillo to discuss the ins and outs of the bands many years of live performances.
What original members are still in Tower of Power?
On drums, David Girabaldi. He’s been in the band four times. Last time he was out for 18 years. On bass, Francis Rocco Prestia. He and I have been playing together since we were 14 years old. He was out of the band for 8 years in the late 70s, early 80s. The other member is Stephen “Doc” Kupka, who’s my songwriting partner. He’s a baritone sax player, and he’s been in the band the whole time, except for a few days.
What’s it like to still be playing with them after so long?
