For latest exhibit, faith inspires local sculptor

GURNEE – Robert Andrus, 86, has always had an artist’s eye and a desire to create his vision by working with his hands.

“I don’t know if I was born with it or what,” said the Gurnee sculptor who embraced his hobby as a full-time job after retiring nearly 18 years ago from a career in the advertising business. “When I was a little kid I used to make model airplanes and ships out of wood. When I married Maxine I made our furniture and stuff because we couldn’t afford [furniture] at the time. I’ve just always loved it.”

Andrus’ latest series “Sculpture and Scripture” will be on display at 7 p.m.  July 12, at Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Grayslake.
