Health officials: Mammogram benefits outweigh risks

When Lori Deere, health outreach coordinator with YWCA Lake County and a registered medical assistant, answers the phone at YWCA Lake County she is often the first person women in the community confide in about breast healthcare concerns.

"When they call us and say, 'I want a mammogram. I have pain here, or redness over there.' I'll say, 'Well have you spoken to a doctor?' and they'll say, 'No,'" Deere said.

In 2011 nearly 10 percent of women at the recommended age in Lake County had not had their first mammogram, according to Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.
