Every year in America, 1.4 million people are diagnosed with diabetes.
Unfortunately, half of all Americans who are 65 or older have pre-diabetes and are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and more than 11 million Americans over the age of 65 have already been diagnosed with diabetes. It’s also been reported that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.
With such sobering statistics, you’ll certainly want to minimize your risk of getting diabetes and fortunately there are things you can do to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
What can you do to minimize your risk?
According to a study by the American Diabetes Association and the National Diabetes Prevention Program, individuals were able to reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by 58 percent with lifestyle changes that included better nutrition, increased physical activity and weight loss of between 5 and 7 percent. The study’s results were even more inspiring for seniors, as those over 60 reduced their risk for type 2 diabetes by 71 percent.
Those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can manage their health. Changing one’s diet by eliminating fat and sugar is helpful, as is losing weight. Becoming physically active is also recommended.

Those with type 2 diabetes should continue to stay informed about diabetes and make sure they take any medications that have prescribed by their doctor. Quitting smoking is recommended, as is checking blood glucose.
