The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County’s (SRACLC) Special Olympics snowshoeing team competed Saturday in the District Snowshoeing tournament at Lambs Farm in Libertyville.

The team of 10 people competed in the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 meters races and a 4x100 meter relay, according to a news release from the district.

Chris Walti of Libertyville led the team, bringing home gold in all of his events. He raced in the 50 meter, 100 meter, and the 4x100 relay. Kyle Tuckey took first place in the 800 meter, the 1600 meter, and the 4x100 relay. Overall, the team took first in 15 events and will send nine athletes to compete in the Winter Games at Chestnut Mountain in Galena from Feb. 7-9.

“I could not be more proud of our athletes," Coach Kelly Smith said in the news release. "They committed to 10 weeks of snowshoeing practice in all sorts of interesting weather. They worked incredibly hard racing through the mud, deep snow and frozen ground. Their devotion to practice no matter the condition has definitely paid off.”
