Final car show on Volo Auto Museum grounds an end of era

VOLO – Members of the VooDoo Kings Kustom Car Club coordinated the fifth and final VooDoo A-Go-Go show July 1 at the Volo Auto Museum.

The show was filled with hundreds of pre-1985 entries, from traditional custom, hot rod, muscle and motorcycle categories. Show entry and dunk tank proceeds benefited Compass to Care, a nonprofit that helps parents pay travel expenses to bring their children to cancer treatment destinations.

Museum officials have decided to reserve remaining open land at the 35-acre site for museum expansion rather than future car shows. The museum has added about 40,000 square feet of new exhibits in the past five years, Museum Director Brian Grams said in a news release.

While it’s the end of an era as a car show venue, it’s the best move for the museum going forward, Grams said.

“Car shows are no longer rare or exclusive,” Grams said. “Our property was in use for shows two to five days a year, but we’re paying property taxes on it every day. We feel the best use for our remaining open space is future museum expansion. That’s our daily expertise, and the best way to utilize our property 362 days a year.”
