The McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Ernesto R. Silva, according to a news release. He died from injuries to his spine and aorta, according to the release, and toxicology results are pending.
Richmond Fire Chief Rick Gallas said crews responded about 6 a.m. to a report of a head-on vehicle collision with a possible car fire and extrication necessary.
Fire personnel immediately shut down Route 12 from Kuhn Road to North Solon Road until about 10:30 a.m.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Richmond and Spring Grove police and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District also responded.
The sheriff’s office said Silva’s 2004 Lincoln Navigator SUV was traveling east on Route 12 when it crossed the centerline and collided with two vehicles traveling west – a 2011 Toyota RAV4 and 2016 GMC Acadia.
The coroner’s report said Silva’s Lincoln spun and stopped against a guardrail.
Silva’s vehicle was reported to be on fire, but it was out by the time crews arrived, Gallas said.
Gallas said the drivers of the other vehicles – a 74-year-old Fox Lake woman in the RAV4 and a 47-year-old Ingleside man in the Acadia – were taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry for injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.
The sheriff’s office confirmed both have been treated and remain in good condition.
Silva was pronounced dead about
6 a.m. at the scene.
There were no other occupants in any of the three vehicles, the sheriff’s office said. Air bags deployed in all three vehicles, and all three drivers were wearing their seat belts during the crash.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating the crash.
The reason Silva’s SUV crossed the centerline still is unknown.
