Island Land resident's photograph a finalist in national competition

ISLAND LAKE – Sitting on a porch in Loveland, Colorado, Island Lake resident Ken Wick saw the shadow of a sunset that could only be described as a picture. So he took it.

That photograph, “Nature’s Lighthouse,” is a contestant in The Weather Channel’s It’s Amazing Out There 2017 Photo Contest.

On that porch, Wick was more often than not in the presence of something great – family. Wick’s sister’s brother-in-law, Rick Moehling, wife Vicki and three kids so often sat out on their visits together, talking and laughing against a backdrop of sunrises and sets spilling over the mountains of a place they like to call “God’s country.”

As the years passed, the porch started to become even more populated, not just because of the presence of more, but because of the absence of one. On January 7, 2014, Vicki Moehling lost her year and a half-long battle with ALS, and in support of the family they so love, kin on both sides of the family made the trip in support.

In September 2016, Wick again sat on the porch during his visit to the Moehling home for their annual golf outing for Live-Laugh-Love-Believe, a nonprofit established in honor of Vicki.

Wick, a photography enthusiast, snapped the photo of the sunset, Rick Moehling by his side. Wick hopes the photo, the name “Nature’s Lighthouse” given by Rick Moehling, will pay tribute to the view Vicki so loved and the woman they all miss.

Wick's photograph as of Friday was ranked 20th among the more than 66,000 entries being considered in The Weather Channel contest, with 247 votes. People can vote for their favorite photo daily through Sept. 1 at https://weather.com/photos/contest.

Photo submissions are vetted to ensure they are an accurate representation of the moment they purport to capture. Minor adjustments such as cropping, sharpening and slight color corrections are allowed, but significant alterations, whether done digitally or mechanically, result in disqualification.

Wick could win up to $15,000 if chosen as the grand prize winner, with prizes also being awarded for second and third place. The winners will be announced Sept. 11. If Wick wins, he intends to donate to Live-Laugh-Love-Believe benefitting ALS research and Walt Clark Middle School in Loveland, Colorado, of which Vicki Moehling was a long time admin employee.
