The Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will hold their annual used book sale at Lake Villa District Library from Thursday, Aug. 14, to

Aug.16.

Preview Night for current Friends of the Lake Villa District Library members will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14. *Friends of LVDL Memberships can be purchased or renewed at the door beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 14. Please note that due to space constraints, the Friends do not allow the hoarding or stockpiling of books before purchase at the Preview Night Sale.

The sale will be open to the public Friday, Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Aug.16 from 9 a.m. to 1.p.m., ending with a $1 per bag sale from 2 to 3 p.m. Donations of used books in good condition will be accepted from Aug. 2-9. NO encyclopedias, textbooks, or magazines please. For more information about the Friends or the Annual Used Book Sale, please call (847)-356-8527 ext. 400.

Shop & Share - Jewel-Osco

The Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will hold a Shop & Share fund-raising program from Aug. 18-20 at all Jewel-Osco Stores. By shopping at Jewel-Osco on one of those days, five percent of the total purchases, excluding tax, will be donated by Jewel-Osco to the organization. You can get a Shop & Share slip at the Circulation Desk after Aug. 1.

Adult Summer Reading 2008

This summer, as you bask in the sun and enjoy lazy days, remember to read. And when you read this summer, think Lincoln! Feb. 12, 2009, marks the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. So, what better way to get prepared than to read a Lincoln biography or a historical fiction title set in the time in which he lived? Lincoln “Reading” Logs are available at the Adult Reference Desk. Keep track of what you read and win!

Last summer many of you sent us vacation post cards which we used to decorate our United States travel map. This summer we’d like you to SHOW US YOUR LINCOLNS.

If you see any Lincoln inspired or named place — we want to see it. And to make it even more fun, snap a picture of it with one of our Flat-Abes which will be available at the Adult  Reference Desk all summer long. One Book/One Community 2008

This year’s One Book/One Community title is the perfect book to get you in the Lincoln spirit. March by Geraldine Brooks is set during the 1860s and tells the story of Mr. March, the absent father in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Glimpse what life was like for young Mr. March and Marmee in Concord during Lincoln’s time. Copies of March were generously donated by the Friends of the Lake Villa District Library.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

To obtain your library card, you will need to present identification showing who you are and where you live. Minor cards are issued for patrons up to the age of 17 and require a parent or legal guardian’s signature. There is no age requirement, but a minor must be able to write his/her name. Library cards are issued to residents of the library district at no charge. LVDL serves all residents in Lake Villa Township.

Knitters’ Night Out

Due to over-whelming popularity, Knitters’ Night Out is extended! Grab your knitting or crochet project and spend some time at the library. This casual group meets every other Tuesday to share knitting ideas and a few laughs. No registration necessary. Must be 18 or older to attend. No Sew Workshops for Lake Villa Civil War Weekend

Lake Villa Historical Society volunteers will help you get day dresses and ball gowns ready for the sixth annual Lake Villa Civil War Reenactment at the Lehmann Mansion – Sept. 13-14. University of Illinois Master Gardeners Plant Clinic

The Master Gardeners will be available to answer any and all garden related questions you may have from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Lake Villa District Library. Adult Book Discussion

The Adult Book Discussion meets the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. in the library’s Wilton Room. Books are available at the Circulation Desk the month before the discussion. Refreshments are served, and new members or visitors are always welcome.

The Write Stuff

Announcing Live Homework Help

You’ve got homework. We’ve got help. Lake Villa District Library now offers help from real, live tutors via the Internet!

Beginning Aug. 1, Live Homework Help is available for Kindergarten – 12th grade, college introduction level students, and adult learners everyday 2-9 p.m. This program connects students to a real live tutor. Children and young adults at home or visiting the library simply log on to the Lake Villa District Library website, type in their library card number,  enter their grade level and the subject they need help in and within a few minutes or less are connected to an expert tutor. Students can receive help in math, science, social studies or English. If  you’d like to learn more about the program, please call Youth Services at (847)-356-7711 or visit the Web site at www.lvdl.org.

These terrific programs are free of charge and fill very quickly.   Tickets are required for all adults and their accompanying children 2 years and older.  Tickets can be acquired either in person at the Youth Services desk or; in limited numbers, online beginning 10 a.m. the day of registration.
