The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association has announced that it will be awarding more than $53,000 in college scholarships to students throughout Illinois.

Scholarships will be available to Illinois students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2010-2011 academic year. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran will be awarding one scholarship in the amount of $500.

There are no restrictions for any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin.  The only limitations are as follows:

• Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents

• Scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within Illinois

• Students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2010-2011 school year (excluding summer session).

Applications are now available at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office or at www.ilsheriff.org. Students must complete the application, answer the essay question and return all documentation to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 25 S. Martin Luther King Jr Ave., Waukegan, IL 60085.

Applications must be postmarked by April 12, 2010.

With tuition costs sky-rocketing, every little bit helps. So, if you are a student thinking about college, get to work on grabbing as many scholarships you can. You will not regret it.
