Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) announced Jan. 30 that Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes sailor, FC1(SW/AW) William D. Stanford II is their choice for Sailor of the Year 2011. 
Vice Adm. S. R. Van Buskirk, Chief of Naval Personnel announced on Jan. 30 that the Great Lakes Chapter of the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) took top honors as Shore Chapter of the Year for 2011. 
   Each honor graduate and award winner will receive the commanding officer’s commemorative coin in recognition of their superlative achievements during recruit training. The honor graduates for Feb. 3 recruit review graduation are as follows:
Two Great Lakes Fire Department first responders received certificates of special achievement, issued by CNIC Fire and Emergency Services, and a dispatcher received a letter of appreciation at a ceremony at Fire Station 1 on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
“The pain is temporary. It’s worth it, to be able to help somebody,” said CMDCM Leon R. Walker Jr., Naval Station Great Lakes command master chief. The Cleveland, Ohio native returned from Washington, D.C., on  Jan. 17, where he was a Department of Defense bone marrow donor for a 52-year-old woman he has never met.
Members of the Naval Reserve (NR) Naval Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU), Great Lakes held their annual ice dive on Jan. 21 in Silver Lake, Oakwood Hills, Ill.
Sailors from Training Support Center (TSC), Great Lakes and the learning sites volunteered to judge over a 100 science fair projects at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, Ill. on Jan. 23.

It’s been quite a year for FC2 Daria Seipeltyra, who noted that, “2011 is the best year I could have asked for.”
“The 16th Annual Great Lakes’ Winterfest Celebration proved to be another successful and safe event,” said Elisabeth Weaver, MWR Community Activities Division director.
Vice Adm. Scott R. Van Buskirk, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, N1 (Manpower, Personnel Training and Education or MPT&E) paid a visit Jan. 12, to Training Support Center and learning sites, giving him the opportunity to observe a variety of training techniques.
The chief of naval personnel (CNP) visited Recruit Training Command (RTC) Jan. 12-13.
The Chicago Cubs Caravan rolled in to Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Jan. 12 to shake hands with, and help feed service members stationed here.
Training Support Center (TSC), Great Lakes has announced as their selection, FCSN Varinda M. Thongpet as Student of the Month (SOM) for December 2011.
